Area - Cubelles

Cubelles is one of our coastal towns, located at the mouth of the river Foix, in the most western part of the area. It was a town of great importance in the middle ages, and its castle protected the settlers of the neighbouring Geltrú who decided to leave because of the so-called droit du seigneur and form La Vila Nova. This is reflected in the town charter, where Vilanova i la Geltrú is called ´Vilanova de Cubelles´.

We invite you to take a walk through this Mediterranean town which offers a pretty and quiet urban centre and an extensive promenade along excellent fine sandy beaches.

The route can begin with a visit to the Permanent Exhibition of the Clown Charlie Rivel, which displays the legacy of the universal clown and favourite son of the town of Cubelles, Josep Andreu Lasserre, on the ground floor of the Castell dels Marquesos d´Alfarràs, built in 1675 on the remains of the old 10th century castle.

This reform greatly remodelled the building, which changed and notably expanded the original fortification converting it into a small rectangular civil palace with three floors.

Declared of cultural interest in 1949, the Town Council bought it in the 1980s and it is currently undergoing restoration work. In a rehabilitated part of the ground floor is the municipal tourism office.
