Climate

Barcelona’s location on the Mediterranean coast means the city enjoys a temperate climate with very pleasant temperatures all year round.

What are the average temperatures?

Summers are usually fairly warm and humid, temperatures sometimes reaching highs of 35°C during the hottest months, although the average in summer stays around 29ºC. Lying on the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is guaranteed fresh sea breezes to help cool off. During early summer and early autumn, stormy and heavy downpours are fairly common. But generally, Barcelona is a sunny place and light clothing should be fine. Just be prepared for sudden showers, as well as cooler evenings. January is the coldest month of the year and, although winters in Barcelona are generally fairly mild, it's still a good idea to bring warm and rainproof clothing. Barcelona is best to visit during the months of March through to June, and during September and October. This way, you'll avoid the discomfort of travelling in summer heat or during the cooler winter months.

Items To Pack

If you're coming here for a break between September and May, make sure you bring a jacket and jumper for the nights and just in case there are some cold days. In the winter months (November, December, January & February) you should bring a coat etc. The other thing to bring in the winter is slippers - if where you are staying has limestone or marble flooring your feet will freeze! Pack lightweight clothes for the summer months.

Is it hot enough in Barcelona to sunbathe all year round?

Sunbathing is not really possible all year round, especially between October and May when there are quite cold winds. It will, however, be warm enough to sit outside for at least 2 hours per day, to eat or just enjoy the sun over a coffee. You can get a tan virtually every day from June to the beginning of October.
